Statement of Qualification
Under the general direction of the Department of Justice Administrator I (DOJA I) of the Game Review Unit, the Staff Services Analyst (SSA) is responsible for approving/denying the games and gaming activities conducted in California cardrooms. The duties include interpreting and applying gambling laws and regulations in the review of applications requesting approval to conduct a new game or gaming activity. The SSA will prepare written letters on the approval or denial of a new game or gaming activity; conduct oral briefings to management regarding recommendations for approval or denial of an application; research the rules and method of play of a new game or gaming activity; serve as the contact for the gambling industry; provide training to licensing analysts, field representatives and agents regarding the games approved for play by the Bureau; and ensure the Attorney General’s website is updated with the most current information regarding the rules of the games. Monitor cardroom activities with special focus on the ongoing gambling investigations/complaints regarding unauthorized gaming activities; illegal gambling, and other compliance related issues.
Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong analytical skills; good research skills; experience in interpreting and applying laws; effective time-management and organizational skills. Must be able to effectively communicate and demonstrate good judgment when interacting with the public and professional staff; ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines; integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; strong proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; and good attendance. Must have the ability to work both independently and as a team member; carry out prescribed tasks with minimal supervision; be a self-starter, flexible, and have a positive attitude. Willingness to travel.
